Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu from June 28 Due to Active Southwest Monsoon

Chennai, June 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu in the coming days. Due to the active southwest monsoon, heavy rain is expected in over a dozen districts starting June 28.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, a change in the speed of western winds may lead to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in several parts of the state on Thursday.

The weather department indicated that light to moderate rain could occur in some areas of the Western Ghats and coastal Tamil Nadu, accompanied by strong winds.

It is anticipated that light to moderate rain, along with strong winds, will continue in parts of southern Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats region, and northern interior districts over the next two days.

Meteorologists have stated that the current monsoon conditions are favorable for continuous rainfall in large areas of the state.

From Sunday, June 28, heavy rainfall is likely in several districts, including Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvannamalai.

Officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, as heavy rain could lead to flooding in low-lying regions and disrupt local activities.

The IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies for Chennai on Thursday. Additionally, light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected in the city and surrounding areas during the evening and night.

Weather conditions are expected to remain similar in the coming days. The department also mentioned that maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to stay around normal until Sunday, providing relief from the recent humid conditions.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised to avoid going to sea, as strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour and adverse weather conditions are expected in the southwestern Bay of Bengal.

Warnings regarding sea currents have also been issued for coastal areas of Karaikal and Nagapattinam, and authorities have urged fishing communities to strictly adhere to the advice.

As of Thursday morning, 4 cm of rainfall was recorded in Thammampatti of Salem district over the past 24 hours, making it the highest in the state. This was followed by 3 cm of rain in Veppanthattai of Perambalur district.
