Hyderabad, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed a recent High Court ruling that disqualified legislator Danam Nagender, who defected from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join Congress. The BJP is now urging all defecting legislators to resign and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate.
N. Ramchander Rao, the state BJP president, described the court’s decision as a significant victory on moral, legal, and constitutional grounds. He noted that the court overturned a previous ruling made by the assembly speaker.
On social media platform X, Rao criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, questioning, “Rahul Gandhi often carries a copy of the constitution. How can he ignore the Tenth Schedule and the anti-defection law introduced by his father?”
Rao accused the Congress government of perpetuating the same culture of defection that characterized the previous BRS administration. He argued that the High Court’s ruling dealt a severe blow to Congress, highlighting their failure on both moral and legal fronts.
He called for all defecting legislators to resign immediately, emphasizing the need to respect democracy and the constitution by returning to the electorate for a new mandate.
BJP leader Maheshwar Reddy also praised the High Court’s ruling, asserting that it represented a victory for democracy in the party’s ongoing legal battle. He pointed out that Nagender was elected on a party ticket but later ran for office with a different party, a move the court deemed unacceptable.
Reddy accused Congress of mocking democracy by encouraging such defections and urged the party to recognize the seriousness of the issue. He insisted that if Congress leaders genuinely respected democracy, they should facilitate the resignations of Nagender and other defectors rather than appealing to the Supreme Court.
Nagender was among ten BRS legislators who switched allegiance to Congress in 2024.
