Amritsar, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh in Amritsar has intensified political debates over law and order in Punjab. Singh was shot dead while on duty in Majitha, prompting criticism from the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal parties directed at the Aam Aadmi Party government.
Opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa highlighted the growing threat posed by weapons and drugs being smuggled into Punjab via drones. He stated, “Today, as BJP National President Nitin Nabin launched a state-wide ‘Drug-Free Punjab Journey’ from Pathankot, I want to draw attention to a serious incident. At 3 AM, gunmen on motorcycles opened fire near the district’s largest grain market, killing a Punjab police sub-inspector. This occurred in the border belt stretching 550 kilometers from Pathankot to Fazilka, where drones are frequently bringing in arms.”
Bajwa emphasized the alarming frequency of drone activity, noting that they carry significant quantities of heroin and weapons, which are devastating the youth. He expressed concern for his own district, Gurudaspur, and questioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s commitment to maintaining law and order. “When will you take your responsibilities seriously? You mock political leaders on stage, but when will you act as Chief Minister and Home Minister? Have you paid attention to Punjab’s law and order situation?” he asked.
He further challenged Mann to resign if he cannot protect Punjabis and safeguard the youth from the drug crisis.
Daljit Singh Cheema of the Shiromani Akali Dal echoed these sentiments, stating, “The term ‘law and order’ has disappeared from Punjab’s vocabulary. Daily incidents of murder, robbery, and extortion have become the norm. Violence, including grenade attacks and assaults on police, is rampant. Just last night, another ASI was killed on duty.”
Regarding an incident where eggs and tomatoes were thrown at former Union Minister Ravneet Bittu’s convoy, Cheema remarked that while he was unaware of the specifics, any attack on him would be unacceptable.
Cheema also mentioned the first meeting of the Shiromani Akali Dal’s newly formed manifesto committee, chaired by Sardar Balvinder Singh Bhundar. The committee discussed its approach and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to implementing its manifesto when in power.
