Kolkata, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal’s political landscape is heating up as the Nandigram by-election approaches. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a fierce attack on the BJP, accusing them of engaging in political vendetta following the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan.
In a post on social media platform X, Banerjee stated, “Shortly after we announced our support for the Congress candidate in Nandigram, Milan Pradhan was arrested. The timing raises serious questions and reflects the BJP’s old tactic of resurrecting old cases. But why now? Right after we expressed our support for Congress? The BJP’s vindictive nature and oppressive politics reveal a clear pattern. Manipulation, vote theft, and intimidation through collusion with election agencies are daily assaults on democracy.”
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) had recently declared its support for Milan Pradhan in the Nandigram by-election. This announcement was quickly followed by news of his arrest in connection with an old case, prompting Banerjee to question the motives behind the timing.
Banerjee accused the BJP of using old cases to harass opposition leaders during elections, referring to it as their “old formula.” She further alleged that there is a collusion between election agencies and the BJP, which together are undermining democracy.
Nandigram has a storied electoral history, known for its high-profile contests, particularly between Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. This by-election is viewed as crucial, with TMC’s support for Congress signaling a significant political shift and a move towards opposition unity.
