New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : The political landscape in New Delhi intensified on September 18, as Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched a fierce critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This response came after the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in connection with an old murder case, which both parties labeled as an attempt to undermine the upcoming by-election in Nandigram, West Bengal.
Earlier in the day, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her support for Pradhan. This came after TMC candidate Sanchita Dey Pradhan withdrew her nomination for the Nandigram by-election, a move that has raised eyebrows.
In a self-recorded video, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the BJP of fear and desperation. He claimed that the party arrested Pradhan to thwart the opposition’s promising prospects in the by-election and to turn the election into a mockery.
Chowdhury criticized the BJP, stating that it is a disgrace to democracy that elections are conducted by a government that rules the state and controls all national institutions. He asserted that the BJP is attempting to make the election a farce.
The Congress leader condemned the arrest and indicated that he intends to draw the Election Commission‘s attention to the matter. Fellow Congress member Udit Raj added that had the Congress candidates agreed not to contest or vote, they would not have faced arrest. He suggested that Dey Pradhan might have been threatened or bribed, calling the situation entirely undemocratic.
Echoing these sentiments, TMC legislator Kunal Ghosh described Pradhan’s arrest as a “panicked response” from the BJP. He noted that this occurred immediately after Banerjee announced her support for the Congress candidate in the Nandigram by-election. Ghosh characterized the BJP’s actions as indicative of a fascist government, claiming that a “police state” is in effect, and that the BJP is fearful because it lacks public trust.
