As a dancer and choreographer, Tanushree has carved a unique identity in the Indian dance scene. She has advanced Uday Shankar’s ‘Naya Nritya’ style, creating a dance form that honors classical traditions while embracing modern experimentation.

Under the guidance of her mother, Amala Shankar, Tanushree trained for seven years, gaining a profound understanding of Uday Shankar’s legacy, which she has reinterpreted through her creativity. She is the choreographer and artistic director of the Tanushree Shankar Dance Company.
Under her leadership, the company has toured over 40 countries and performed on prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Epcot Center in Florida, and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Tanushree has choreographed for several significant events, including being the chief choreographer for the Kolkata Carnival in 2002, the first of its kind in India, organized by the British High Commission.
In 2008, she choreographed the Indo-French ballet “Padmavati,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, in Paris, featuring international artists. She has also performed at major events like the Asian Games, the Festival of India in the Soviet Union, and the Wills World Cup Cricket Championship.
For her creative and experimental contributions, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011, India’s highest honor in the performing arts. Tanushree has also been involved in fashion shows, films, and various international projects.
She served as the curator for dance presentations at the first edition of the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, initiated by the Munjal Group, and has remained active in subsequent editions.
