Tamil Nadu Government Eases Eligibility for Thaimaman Thanga Modhiram Scheme

Chennai, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu government has announced a relaxation of eligibility criteria for its ‘Thaimaman Thanga Modhiram’ scheme. Under this initiative, newborns delivered in state-run hospitals receive a gold ring weighing one gram.

The scheme was launched by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on September 28, 2026. Initially, only mothers who were permanent residents of Tamil Nadu were eligible to benefit from the program.

However, the state government has now decided to extend the scheme to women born in Tamil Nadu who have since moved to other states after marriage. To qualify, these women must provide valid documentation proving that their parents are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu.

This decision comes in response to situations where women living in other states return to Tamil Nadu to give birth. A notable example is Uma Maheshwari, who resides with her husband in Udayagiri, Mysore district, Karnataka, while her parents live in Karaikudi, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu.

Uma returned to Tamil Nadu to deliver her baby, undergoing a cesarean section at Karaikudi Government Headquarters Hospital on September 17, 2026. Initially, she was ineligible for the scheme because she was not a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.

However, following the changes in eligibility, a block medical officer presented her child with a gold ring under the scheme on October 7, 2026, at the same hospital.

The government has clarified that the revised guidelines will be retroactively applicable to eligible children born in Tamil Nadu’s government hospitals from June 22, 2026. This means that children born during this period will also be able to benefit from the scheme.
