Sagar, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The recent reintroduction of cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh marks a significant milestone in wildlife conservation efforts. On October 7, 2026, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released a pair of cheetahs in the newly established Durga Vati Tiger Reserve, located in Sagar district. This event has been hailed as historic for the Bundelkhand region.
During the ceremony, CM Yadav named the cheetahs Viyom and Neera. He emphasized that the terrain of Madhya Pradesh is well-suited for the reestablishment of these majestic animals. Additionally, he took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi.
The Chief Minister highlighted the unique aspects of this new cheetah habitat. He stated that while caring for wildlife is important, it is equally crucial to consider the welfare of local villagers. Committees associated with the forest department have also benefited from this initiative. Revenue generated from tourism in protected areas has reached approximately 800 million rupees this year, with 200 million rupees distributed to nearby communities. He noted that these villagers have lived in proximity to these reserves for generations.
Yadav announced that the government is now offering homestay facilities. Residents within the buffer zone of the tiger reserve can convert their homes into homestays. The government is providing grants of 200,000 to 300,000 rupees to assist these residents. He also mentioned a new era for milk production in the state, emphasizing that the government will purchase milk produced by farmers through cooperative societies.
The Chief Minister explained the differences between this reserve and others, like Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, which have separated cheetahs from other wildlife. The Durga Vati Tiger Reserve not only houses cheetahs but also tigers, which were last spotted in the area 170 years ago.
