Himachal CM Criticizes Arrest of Rahul Gandhi as Disturbing

Shimla, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh has strongly condemned the arrest of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi by Delhi police, labeling it as a deeply concerning act. Speaking to the media in Shimla, Sukhu expressed alarm at the detention, which occurred just before Gandhi and other opposition leaders were set to raise significant issues related to the election process before the Chief Election Commissioner.

Sukhu criticized the preemptive detention of elected representatives, stating that it highlights an ongoing attempt to undermine democracy and the Constitution in India, allegedly orchestrated by the BJP in collaboration with Election Commission officials. In response to the incident, the Congress party organized a protest outside the Lok Bhawan in Shimla, where party leaders and activists submitted a memorandum to the Governor.

The Chief Minister emphasized that elections are the foundation of democracy, and any questions regarding the Election Commission should be addressed through dialogue and transparency. He reiterated that it is the responsibility of democratic institutions to listen to the opposition’s concerns and provide answers.

Sukhu lamented that Gandhi’s arrest, while he was attempting to peacefully express dissent alongside nearly 300 MPs, is a regrettable event. He accused the BJP government of trying to silence every voice that challenges its authority. He noted that Gandhi’s efforts to protect democracy are commendable and that his fight is not for personal gain but to uphold the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution over the past 75 years.
