Badakhshan, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : An explosion in Badakhshan province, northern Afghanistan, injured two civilians on Wednesday, according to provincial police spokesperson Ehsanullah Kamgar. The incident occurred in the Hangar area of Faizabad city when explosives hidden in a flowerpot detonated, causing minor injuries to the individuals in a passing car.
Kamgar reported that police have arrested four suspects in connection with the blast, although further details have not been disclosed. Local media sources revealed that a similar grenade explosion in August near a private school in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of western Kabul injured over 52 people, including children.
Taliban police spokesperson Khalid Jadran stated that the recent explosion was caused by a grenade, but did not provide information regarding the individual carrying it or the circumstances of the explosion. Eyewitnesses noted that the grenade detonated near a school student, who was also injured. The circumstances surrounding how the student obtained the grenade remain unclear.
The Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood is densely populated and has been the site of numerous violent attacks, particularly targeting schools and educational institutions. The area, home to a significant Hazara and Shia community, has faced ongoing security threats for years.
The recent blast has reignited concerns about the safety of students and civilians in a region plagued by explosive materials and weapons, even after decades of conflict. Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, condemned the “heinous attack” and called for an independent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
Bennett took to social media to express his outrage over the attack, highlighting the targeting of children in the predominantly Hazara area of Kabul, which has faced violence for far too long. He emphasized the urgent need for a thorough and independent inquiry to ensure justice for the victims.
