Chennai, June 24: In a bid to make the police administration more accessible and accountable, Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police (DGP) Mahesh Kumar Agrawal has directed senior police officials across the state to meet with the public twice a week to personally listen to their complaints.
According to the DGP’s order, Wednesdays and Saturdays have been designated as ‘Public Grievance Redressal Days.’ On these days, Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Inspectors General (IGs), and police commissioners must be present in their offices from 11 AM to 1 PM to hear public grievances. This initiative aims to ensure that complaints and issues are addressed swiftly and effectively.
The DGP emphasized that officers should engage positively with complainants, listen to their concerns, and take necessary actions within the stipulated time. The directive highlights the importance of treating the public with respect and resolving their complaints without unnecessary delays.
Officers have also been instructed to adopt a friendly demeanor while listening to complaints. In cases where designated officers are unable to attend the sessions due to court appearances, government meetings, law enforcement duties, or other essential tasks, their immediate senior officers should step in to hear the grievances and initiate necessary actions.
This system aims to prevent long waiting times for citizens and ensure a continuous process for resolving complaints. The DGP has also mandated that swift actions be taken on grievances received during these sessions, with follow-ups until appropriate resolutions are achieved.
This order reflects the commitment of the police department to enhance public service and strengthen trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies. By establishing a structured platform for direct interaction with senior officials, this initiative is expected to expedite the resolution of public complaints and increase accountability within the force. The DGP also mentioned that the state police headquarters will closely monitor the implementation of the grievance resolution system and the performance of the officers involved.
