Shillong, June 24: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has instructed the education department to develop a comprehensive roadmap aimed at improving the state’s performance in the Performance Grading Index (PGI). This roadmap should include clear timelines, funding requirements, and monitoring methods. Sangma expressed concerns that the current rankings do not accurately reflect the state’s educational initiatives.
During a high-level review meeting at the State Guest House, Sangma assessed ongoing programs related to school infrastructure, student welfare, inclusive education, and academic performance. He noted that the PGI ranking fails to represent the actual work being done in the education sector. Many shortcomings, he stated, stem from deficiencies in reporting and monitoring rather than a lack of action.
The Chief Minister urged officials to adopt a systematic monitoring framework. He emphasized the need to identify specific shortcomings in schools and to enhance compliance with PGI indicators through increased use of technology and data analytics.
Reviewing infrastructure metrics, Sangma highlighted the necessity to improve access to ICT facilities, smart classrooms, science labs, libraries, reading corners, art and craft rooms, drinking water facilities, and rainwater harvesting systems. He called on the department to identify cost-effective and phased measures that would help schools meet established standards and improve the learning environment.
The meeting also focused on inclusive education. Officials presented plans to strengthen facilities for children with special needs (CWSN), including ramps, accessible toilets, assistive technology, and specialized teacher training. Sangma directed the department to ensure that schools receive adequate support to comply with accessibility regulations.
Emphasizing the importance of student welfare, the Chief Minister reviewed initiatives related to health check-ups, nutrition, career counseling, and cybersecurity awareness. He stressed that health, nutrition, and education-related measures should be implemented in tandem to enhance student well-being and academic outcomes.
Sangma also highlighted the significance of menstrual health and hygiene for adolescent girls, noting that these issues directly impact school attendance, health, and academic performance. He called for a sustainable implementation model that includes the possibility of producing biodegradable sanitary pads through self-help groups.
Concluding the meeting, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education and a supportive learning environment for every child in Meghalaya.
