Mumbai, February 17: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislators formally appointed Sunetra Pawar, the wife of the late former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, as the National President on Monday. This decision comes in the wake of Ajit Pawar’s sudden passing in a plane crash on January 28, prompting strong support for Sunetra from party members.
The party’s national executive meeting is scheduled for February 26 in Mumbai, where the formal appointment process will be completed.
According to NCP sources, Sunetra Pawar has accepted the responsibility of National President, aiming to forge a new path, especially following the unexpected loss of her husband and the party’s former leader.
The meeting was held in a somber atmosphere, where legislators assured Sunetra of their support in strengthening the party organization and advancing Ajit Pawar’s legacy in the coming days.
Party’s executive president Praful Patel, state unit chief Sunil Tatkare, and senior party minister Chhagan Bhujbal addressed the gathering, reminiscing about Ajit Pawar’s contributions to the party’s growth and his vision for its expansion across the state.
In an emotional speech, Sunetra Pawar reflected on her connection with Ajit Pawar and the circumstances that led her to become the leader of the legislative party and Deputy Chief Minister.
She expressed to the legislators, “I have decided to accept this new responsibility to keep the party united and strengthen its position.”
