Sukendu Shekhar Resigns from TMC and Rajya Sabha Following Election Defeat

Kolkata, June 8: The resignation trend from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) continues following a significant electoral defeat. Sukendu Shekhar has stepped down from both his primary membership in TMC and his position in the Rajya Sabha.

In a statement, Shekhar expressed, “The recent elections have shown that the voters of Bengal have lost all trust in the Trinamool Congress, which has been in power for 15 years. The electorate has rejected the rampant corruption, severe oppression of women, and the widespread failures and chaos in education, health, industry, employment, and law and order.”

He further stated, “For the first time in Bengal’s history, the BJP has achieved a significant victory. The newly elected government has begun implementing several programs aimed at the overall development and reconstruction of Bengal, as outlined in its electoral manifesto. Accepting the people’s historic decision, I resign from my primary membership in TMC and my Rajya Sabha seat.”

Earlier, Mohammad Azmal Siddiqui, the state secretary of TMC’s minority cell, also resigned from his position. In a conversation, Siddiqui mentioned, “I feel very liberated after resigning. I feel much lighter and more at ease now.”

He accused the party of failing to genuinely represent the interests of the minority community, stating, “There is no real opportunity to work for minorities here. They are given nothing substantial, just empty promises. That’s why I did not want to remain in this position.”

Siddiqui added, “People were threatened and used, but I hope Suvendu Adhikari will unite both the Hindu and Muslim communities and lead Bengal in the right direction.”

He claimed that he was pressured to join TMC in 2015-16. “We were running a business. Binoy Mishra, on behalf of Abhishek Banerjee, asked us for money. When we refused, false cases were filed against us. We had to seek bail from the Supreme Court and High Court. We joined the party out of fear of Abhishek Banerjee,” he said.
