Mumbai, June 27: Filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently reminisced about the film ‘Karz’ as it marks its 46th anniversary. Released in June 1980, this film is now considered one of the most memorable in Hindi cinema. However, its journey at the time of release was quite different. Ghai revealed that when the film was declared a box office flop, the entire team was deeply disheartened. Notably, the late actor Rishi Kapoor was particularly affected by this failure.
Ghai shared a special collage on Instagram, featuring images celebrating the film’s success alongside a behind-the-scenes photo from the ‘Karz’ set and the film’s poster. The image shows Ghai directing Rishi Kapoor and actress Tina Munim during the shoot.
In his post, Ghai wrote, “Today, people refer to it as a magnificent musical show, but on June 27, 1980, it was labeled a flop. We were all very disappointed, especially Rishi Kapoor, who was quite sad. Today, that same film is celebrated as a timeless musical. We are all celebrating its 46th anniversary and remembering our dear friend and great actor Rishi Kapoor. ‘Karz’ is also set to be adapted into a Broadway-style musical stage show soon.”
Directed and produced by Subhash Ghai under the Mukta Arts banner, ‘Karz’ featured prominent roles by Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal, Raj Kiran, Prem Nath, Pran, and Durga Khote.
The film’s plot revolves around a successful singer named Monty, who begins to recall mysterious events from his past life. He later discovers that he is the reincarnation of wealthy businessman Ravi Verma, who was murdered by his wife Kamini out of greed for his wealth. The story then unfolds as a thrilling journey for justice and revenge.
Alongside its captivating story, the film’s music has remained etched in people’s hearts. The compositions by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi have immortalized the film. Songs like ‘Om Shanti Om,’ ‘Ek Haseena Thi,’ ‘Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar,’ ‘Main Solah Baras Ki,’ and ‘Paisa O Paisa’ continue to be immensely popular today.
