New Delhi, August 28: In the world of Bollywood, some actresses have captured the hearts of audiences with their beauty and talent in a remarkably short time. Leena Chandavarkar is one such name. By the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, her charm and simplicity made her one of the most celebrated actresses of her era. She starred alongside major stars like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Dilip Kumar, and Sunil Dutt. However, her life story extends beyond the glitz and glamour of films, filled with ups and downs that rival any cinematic tale.
Leena was born on August 29, 1950, in Dharwad, Karnataka. Coming from a Konkani background, her father was an army officer. Initially, she had no desire to enter the film industry, but fate gradually led her in front of the camera.
Before stepping into films, Leena worked in advertisements. She participated in the Filmfare Fresh Face competition held nationwide and became a runner-up. This opened the doors to Bollywood for her.
Her debut film, “Maan Ka Meet,” was released in 1968, directed by Sunil Dutt, featuring Leena alongside Som Dutt. The film was a success, and Leena gained overnight recognition, leading to a flurry of film offers.
The 1970s marked the pinnacle of her career. She appeared alongside major stars in rapid succession. In “Mahboob Ki Mehndi,” she worked with Rajesh Khanna, whose stardom at the time made it a significant opportunity for any actress.
Leena collaborated with Dharmendra in “Rakhwala” and “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka,” and with Jeetendra in “Humjoli,” “Bidaai,” and “Nalayak.” She also starred with Vinod Khanna in “Kaid” and “Jalim,” and with Sanjeev Kumar in “Manchali” and “Anhoni.” It is hard to find a major hero from that era with whom Leena did not work.
However, amidst her on-screen success, her personal life took a dramatic turn. Leena’s first marriage was to Siddharth Bandodkar, a member of a prominent political family in Goa. Siddharth was the son of Goa’s first Chief Minister, Dayanand Bandodkar. Tragically, just days after their wedding, Siddharth died from a gunshot wound in an accident. At only 25 years old, losing her husband was a devastating blow for Leena.
Years later, she found love again with the famous singer and actor Kishore Kumar, and they married. Their relationship garnered significant media attention, especially since Kishore had been married three times before and was considerably older than Leena. Initially, her father opposed the marriage, but they eventually tied the knot and welcomed a son, Sumit Kumar. Unfortunately, fate dealt another cruel hand when Kishore Kumar passed away in 1987, leaving Leena a widow at just 37.
After marrying Kishore Kumar, Leena stepped back from films but did not completely disappear from the screen. She made a brief return in the 1985 film “Sarfarosh” and is considered to have made her last film appearance in “Mamata Ki Chhaon Mein” in 1989, alongside Rajesh Khanna.
Despite her absence from the film industry, Leena Chandavarkar remained connected to the entertainment world. In later years, she made appearances on reality TV shows, including as a guest judge on the music reality show “K for Kishore” in 2007.
