Ahmedabad, March 12: Students and faculty from Gujarat Vidyapeeth celebrated the 96th anniversary of the Dandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, by organizing a foot march from Sabarmati Ashram. Over 100 participants took part in this event to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
The Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Harshad Patel, remarked, “Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Salt Satyagraha from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930. This was the starting point of the historic Dandi journey, with its first stop at the heart of Gujarat Vidyapeeth.”
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi. In a post, he stated, “The historic Dandi March, which began on March 12, 1930, was not just a foot march; it was a powerful voice of public revolution against the injustices of the British Empire. Under Gandhi’s leadership, armed with the principles of truth and non-violence, all those satyagrahis opposed the unjust salt laws, infusing new energy and direction into the Indian freedom struggle—salutations to them.”
It is noteworthy that the Dandi March, or Salt Satyagraha, was conducted between March 12 and April 6, 1930, as a non-violent resistance against the British government’s salt monopoly. Gandhi commenced this 390-kilometer journey from Sabarmati Ashram with 78 trusted volunteers. As crowds joined along the way, it transformed into a mass movement. On the morning of April 6, 1930, when Gandhi reached Dandi (located in the present-day Navsari district of Gujarat) and broke the salt law, it ignited the Civil Disobedience Movement across the nation.
