
Ahmedabad, May 22: A crucial high-level meeting aimed at enhancing India’s maritime security was held in Ahmedabad. Officials from the Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Intelligence Bureau attended the event. This was the 138th meeting of the Offshore Security Coordination Committee (OSCC), chaired by the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Paramesh Shivmani.
The meeting conducted an in-depth review of security arrangements for oil and gas installations, energy platforms, and other vital offshore assets located in the country’s maritime zones. Extensive discussions were held regarding potential security challenges posed by drones and unmanned systems.
It is noteworthy that securing maritime borders and energy installations cannot rely solely on traditional methods. There is a pressing need for advanced surveillance mechanisms and rapid response systems. The committee emphasized enhancing the monitoring capabilities of maritime areas. The meeting also addressed the security challenges arising from increased offshore exploration activities in the Andaman and Nicobar region.
Senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Intelligence Bureau, Directorate General of Shipping, Hydrographer General, Oil and Natural Gas Commission, and various state police departments participated in this significant meeting.
The primary objective was to review and strengthen the security arrangements for offshore installations and critical energy infrastructure in India’s maritime zones. Various aspects of maritime security were thoroughly discussed during the meeting.
The establishment of better coordination among different agencies for maritime area monitoring was also considered. Discussions included how to safeguard India’s offshore assets amid changing global and regional security landscapes. The evolving nature of modern warfare and potential threats posed by drones and unmanned systems were also critically examined.
Additionally, security challenges were assessed in light of the increasing offshore exploration and energy activities in the Andaman and Nicobar region.
