Mumbai: On February 1, 2026, Sunday, the Union Budget for 2026-27 will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. While stock markets usually remain closed on weekends, this time both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be open for normal trading due to the Budget presentation. Additionally, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also operate a special trading session on the same day.
This is not the first time the markets have stayed open on a holiday for the Budget. On previous occasions when the Budget was presented on a non-working day, trading sessions were held to accommodate market participants.
The Finance Minister is scheduled to present the Budget in the Lok Sabha at 11 a.m. on February 1.
The NSE, in its circular, informed members that “due to the Union Budget presentation, the exchange will conduct live trading sessions on February 1, 2026, during regular market hours from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.”
Since February 1 is a settlement holiday, shares bought on January 30 cannot be sold on February 1. Similarly, shares purchased on Budget day cannot be sold the next day.
Nirmala Sitharaman will be presenting the Union Budget for the ninth consecutive time, marking one of the longest tenures for any Finance Minister. This will also be the second full Budget since the NDA government came to power for the third time in 2024.
According to recent reports, investors will closely watch government borrowing, fiscal deficit, and the borrowing plans for the coming year. Analysts expect a year-on-year increase of around 3 percent in borrowings, with the fiscal deficit for 2026-27 estimated to be around 4.1 to 4.2 percent of GDP.
The Department of Economic Affairs prepares all Budget-related documents, which include detailed information on government expenditure, revenue, and new schemes for the upcoming financial year.
Prior to this, the Economic Survey 2025-26 was presented in Parliament on January 29. Following its release, Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran and other senior officials briefed the media on its contents.
