New Delhi, April 11: A devastating fire erupted at a small coaching center located in the Janata Mazdoor Colony of the Welcome police station area in northeast Delhi on Saturday. The coaching center, operating on the ground floor of a modest 20-25 square yard building, exhibited blatant disregard for safety standards. At the time of the incident, several children were present, narrowly escaping harm.
Witnesses reported that the fire was caused by a short circuit. The sudden onset of smoke created chaos in the room. The center, situated in a narrow alley approximately 10 feet wide, had limited exit routes, posing a serious risk of trapping the children inside. Some were working on computers while others were engaged in their studies.
Local residents quickly sprang into action, initiating rescue efforts. Braving the flames, they entered the building to pull the children to safety. Fortunately, all the children were evacuated unharmed. Had it not been for the swift assistance from the community, the situation could have escalated into a major disaster.
Upon receiving the alert, two fire department vehicles arrived at the scene. However, due to the cramped alley, it was challenging for the fire trucks to access the site. After about an hour of strenuous efforts, the fire was finally brought under control.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was indeed caused by a short circuit. Police and fire officials arrived to conduct inspections. The complete absence of fire safety equipment in the coaching center and the decision to conduct classes in such a confined space raises serious safety concerns.
Local residents noted that many small coaching centers in the area operate without adhering to even the most basic safety standards. They have urged the authorities to conduct immediate inspections of all such centers and take strict action against unauthorized and unsafe establishments.
The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are preparing to file negligence charges against the coaching center’s operator.
