Shimla, February 26: The standoff between the Delhi and Himachal Pradesh police, which lasted for 24 hours, came to an end on Thursday. Himachal Pradesh authorities granted permission for the Delhi police to transport three young Congress workers arrested during a shirtless protest at the AI summit to the national capital.
Just a day earlier, the Himachal Pradesh police had filed a kidnapping case against the Delhi police and detained the three Congress workers near the Shoghi border while they were en route to Delhi.
In a late-night development, the three individuals were taken to the residence of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Akansh Kapil after undergoing medical examinations at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Zonal Hospital. They were subsequently placed in custody.
Following this, some Delhi police personnel were detained in the state capital, while others were permitted to return to the national capital with the accused. The remaining officers were instructed to stay and assist in the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping case.
According to the Delhi police, the Special Cell arrested the youth Congress workers, including Saurabh from Amethi (Uttar Pradesh), Arbaaz from Sultanpur, and Siddharth from Rewa. All three had been hiding in Himachal after going underground.
Of the three arrested, two were present at the protest, while one was involved in the conspiracy. The Delhi police received information about their hiding location in Himachal, leading to their arrest.
Reports indicate that at least 20 Delhi police personnel were detained on Wednesday for allegedly arresting youth Congress leaders in the Rohru town of Shimla district. A team from the Delhi police was stopped and detained by Himachal police near Dharampur while transporting the accused back to Delhi after their arrest. The detention of the police personnel was carried out by the Shimla police.
Congress MP Kuldeep Rathore has demanded strict action against the Delhi police from the state government. He described the police’s actions against the youth Congress leaders as an attempt to suppress their voices. In a press statement on Wednesday, Rathore stated, “Raiding premises without a warrant is a clear violation of privacy.”
He criticized the central government, asserting that the country does not belong to a single party. “Governments come and go in a democracy, but it is the opposition’s duty to raise the people’s voice,” he added.
