According to local media outlet El País, an estimated six million people are expected to gather in Spain to view the eclipse, including approximately 460,000 international tourists. Visitors from countries such as the United States and Japan booked hotels and accommodations months in advance.
NASA reports that this event marks the first total solar eclipse visible in Spain in over a century. The path of the eclipse stretches from northern Spain to the Mediterranean region and the Balearic Islands.
For astronomy enthusiasts, this is more than just a typical tourist trip. Many have altered their travel plans to reach locations with clear skies. However, amidst this excitement, Spain faces a significant challenge: the threat of wildfires. The country is currently grappling with extreme heat and dry conditions, with temperatures expected to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, where wildfires are already raging.
According to the Spanish police department, authorities have designated nearly 660 official viewing locations for the eclipse and have implemented extensive security measures. A large deployment of police and security forces is in place to manage crowds, traffic, and fire risks.
The thrill of this astronomical event will last only a few minutes, but the months of preparation and thousands of kilometers traveled make it a memorable global occasion.
The solar eclipse in Spain is set to begin around 7:30 PM local time. Total darkness will occur briefly between 8:26 PM and 8:33 PM, just before sunset. According to NASA, the path of the total solar eclipse will cross Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, and a small part of Portugal.
