New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan, South Delhi, has claimed the lives of six individuals. Rescue teams worked throughout the night, uncovering another body from the rubble early Monday morning. Currently, 11 people have been rescued, but authorities fear that more individuals may still be trapped beneath the debris.
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Sunday while repair work was being conducted in the basement. Officials suspect that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the structural failure. The building, which was approximately 40 to 50 years old, had a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students, many of whom attended Delhi University’s South Campus. There were around 40 rooms in the facility.
Rescue operations continued into Monday morning, involving teams from the Delhi Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Delhi Fire Service, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. The search for additional survivors is ongoing, with a particular focus on locating trapped students.
In response to the disaster, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magistrate inquiry into the collapse. After inspecting the site, she directed officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the incident and instructed that an FIR be filed against the building’s owner. Gupta emphasized that those found responsible would face strict legal action.
The police have confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the alleged owner, Hariram, and others at the South Campus police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Amit Goyal has verified the filing of the case.
As rescue efforts persist, the community remains hopeful for the safe recovery of those still unaccounted for.
