New Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has intensified its cleanliness initiatives in preparation for the upcoming BRICS Summit, set to take place at Bharat Mandapam. An official announced on Sunday that the council has implemented several key measures, including nighttime cleaning, additional mechanized equipment, and increased staffing across various shifts.
With international representatives and visitors expected during the summit, NDMC has prioritized the enhancement of cleanliness and civic amenities. Special cleanliness teams are being deployed on major roads and in markets.
According to an official statement, these enhanced cleanliness measures began on September 4. Approximately 300 cleaning staff are now working during the night, alongside the deployment of 10 mechanical road sweepers (MRS).
The initiative aims to complete most road cleaning and waste collection overnight, ensuring that key streets and public spaces are pristine before the morning rush. Cleaning teams are responsible for sweeping, collecting scattered waste, and emptying bins and trolleys during their shifts.
Following their work at night, jet cleaning is conducted early in the morning, with any remaining tasks or new cleanliness needs addressed during the morning shift.
The NDMC statement emphasized that cleaning arrangements in major markets have been strengthened, with teams cleaning three times daily—morning, evening, and night. Continuous monitoring is being conducted on primary roads and other significant routes.
Furthermore, the NDMC has focused on machine-assisted cleaning as part of its preparation plan. In addition to the 10 MRS deployed at night, 15 ‘Gobbler’ machines will be used during the day to collect scattered waste in key areas.
To ensure thorough cleanliness, 11 pressure-jetting machines have also been placed in various locations, including roads, sidewalks, and bustling market areas. The number of manual cleaning staff has been increased, particularly in areas requiring more hands-on attention.
To prevent waste accumulation in public spaces, the NDMC has expedited door-to-door waste collection in large markets and crowded areas. Waste collected is being removed promptly through a three-shift trolley system.
Cleaning staff are divided into three shifts: approximately 300 during the night, 120 in the evening, and the remainder in the morning. NDMC has instructed its supervisory and field teams to remain on standby 24/7, with staff availability ensured by limiting or canceling leaves where necessary.
These arrangements aim to address any incidents of littering or waste accumulation swiftly, especially in high-traffic areas. Officials have stated their commitment to maintaining cleanliness standards throughout the day, rather than limiting efforts to the traditional morning shift. The combination of nighttime deployment, mechanized cleaning, and morning jet cleaning is expected to allow teams to respond quickly to the changing needs of busy areas.
