Arunachal Pradesh, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant development, military officials from India and China convened on September 6 in Arunachal Pradesh to discuss issues related to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This marked the first core commander-level meeting between the two nations in the eastern sector. The talks took place at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point.
The meeting comes amid ongoing tensions concerning the LAC. During the discussions, both sides addressed various issues affecting the region, aiming to find resolutions. Indian forces were represented by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, commander of the Third Corps.
The security and military responsibilities along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh are managed by two major Indian Corps: the Fourth Corps based in Tezpur and the Third Corps stationed in Rangapahar. The Indian Army has adopted a firm stance regarding the actions of Chinese troops in the region, clearly indicating that it will not compromise on security and operational interests. Differing perceptions have occasionally led to disputes regarding patrols, troop movements, and presence in the area.
Traditionally, core commander-level talks between India and China have been held in the Ladakh sector, particularly at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point. This was a response to heightened tensions following the violent clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020, which resulted in casualties on both sides. In the aftermath, India significantly increased troop deployments in eastern Ladakh and enhanced its military preparedness for high-altitude warfare. The Indian government has firmly responded to any unilateral attempts by China to alter the status quo along the LAC.
Following National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to China, both countries announced measures to maintain peace and stability along the LAC. The recent core commander-level meeting in Arunachal Pradesh is viewed as a crucial step in addressing issues in the eastern sector through direct military dialogue.
Just days prior, Indian Army Chief General Dheeraj Seth visited the Third Corps headquarters to review military readiness and operational capabilities in the region. The Third Corps plays a vital role in monitoring and securing sensitive areas along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh. Given the geographical challenges and ongoing border disputes with China, operational preparedness in this region is deemed critical.
In response to China’s troop build-up aimed at changing the current status of the LAC, India has bolstered its military capabilities and deployment. The Indian Army has also recalibrated its strike corps responsibilities to enhance rapid troop deployment and combat readiness in high-altitude areas.
The initiation of direct core commander-level talks in Arunachal Pradesh is particularly significant, as this region is one of the most sensitive parts of the India-China border dispute. The recent meeting opens a new military channel for dialogue, aiming to manage local disputes and differing perceptions along the LAC through constructive conversation.
