South Africa Level ODI Series 1-1 After Markram’s Century Trumps Kohli-Gaikwad Hundreds

Raipur, December 3: South Africa registered a convincing 4-wicket victory against India in the second ODI match played on Wednesday. With this win, the visiting team has leveled the three-match ODI series 1-1.

India had won the first ODI match in Ranchi by 17 runs after losing the Test series 0-2 to South Africa. The third and final match of the series will be played on December 6 in Visakhapatnam, followed by a five-match T20 series.

After losing the toss and batting first, the Indian team scored 358 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted overs, powered by centuries from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

India lost both their opening batsmen Rohit Sharma (14) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (22) with the score at 62. From there, Virat Kohli partnered with Ruturaj Gaikwad for a crucial 195-run partnership for the third wicket off 156 balls, putting the team in a strong position.

Ruturaj Gaikwad played an impressive innings of 105 runs off 83 balls with 2 sixes and 12 fours, while Virat Kohli scored 102 runs off 93 balls, including 2 sixes and 7 fours.

The Indian team had lost 5 wickets for 289 runs. From there, captain KL Rahul (66) formed an unbeaten 69-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (24), helping the team reach a massive total.

For South Africa, Marco Jansen took the maximum 2 wickets, while Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger claimed 1 wicket each.

In response, the South African team completed the chase in 49.2 overs. South Africa suffered an early blow with Quinton de Kock (8) departing at the score of 26. Captain Temba Bavuma then partnered with Aiden Markram for a 101-run second-wicket partnership to bring the visiting team back into the match.

Bavuma returned to the pavilion after scoring 46 runs off 48 balls. Markram then added 70 runs for the third wicket with Matthew Breetzke, taking the team to 197. Markram played a brilliant knock of 110 runs off 98 balls with 4 sixes and 10 fours before getting out.

Breetzke partnered with Dewald Brevis for the fourth wicket, adding 92 runs off 63 balls to take the team to 289. Brevis scored 54 runs off 34 balls with 6 boundaries before returning to the pavilion.

South Africa needed 27 runs in 30 balls after the completion of 45 overs. During this phase, Tony de Zorzi (17) retired hurt due to a hamstring injury.

Keshav Maharaj (10) came in to bat in his place and took charge alongside Corbin Bosch (26). Both batsmen formed an unbroken 27-run partnership to secure victory for their team. For India, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna took 2 wickets each, while Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav claimed 1 wicket each.
