
Ningbo, April 8: India’s top mixed doubles pair, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Krasto, began their campaign at the Badminton Asia Championship with an impressive victory.
In a match held at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center, the Indian duo defeated Thailand’s Phuwant Horbanluekit and Benyapa Aemsard in a thrilling three-game contest. They won the first game 21-14, but the Thai pair made a comeback, taking the second game 21-11. In the decisive game, Dhruv and Tanisha secured their victory with a score of 21-15.
Next, they will face the Malaysian pair Cheng Tang Jia and Toh Ee Wei in the Round of 16, against whom they have a record of 0-2.
In other mixed doubles matches, the pair of Ashith Surya and Amrita Pramuthesh lost to Malaysia’s Wong Tien Si and Lim Chiu Sien with scores of 21-16, 21-15. Meanwhile, Rohan Kapoor and Gadde Ruthvika Shivani were eliminated after losing to the eighth-seeded pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jamie, with scores of 21-13, 21-19.
Indian star players PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will begin their campaigns on Wednesday. Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu will compete against Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching in the women’s singles Round of 32.
Other players in the women’s singles main draw include Unnati Hooda, Malvika Bansod, and Tanvi Sharma, who will also play their matches starting Wednesday.
In men’s singles, HS Prannoy will face Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dang, while young player Ayush Shetty will compete against China’s fifth-seeded Li Shi Feng. Additionally, Kidambi Srikanth will take on Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, and Paris Olympic semifinalist Lakshya Sen will play his first match against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu.
