Washington, April 8: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has publicly appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to extend a critical deadline by two weeks. This request aims to keep the door open for dialogue amid escalating tensions in West Asia. The White House has indicated it will consider this proposal.
White House Press Secretary Carolina Levitt stated that the President has been informed of the request and a response will be forthcoming. This marks the first official reaction from the U.S. regarding the situation.
In a statement released on the social media platform X, Shahbaz Sharif emphasized that diplomatic efforts are ongoing and tangible results may emerge soon. He urged the U.S. to extend the deadline to facilitate further discussions.
The Pakistani Prime Minister also called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region. He sincerely requested Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a goodwill gesture.
Additionally, he urged all parties involved in the conflict to implement a ceasefire for two weeks. This would allow for negotiations aimed at ending hostilities and fostering long-term peace and stability in the region.
This appeal comes at a time when circumstances are rapidly evolving. The U.S. has expressed a willingness to engage in talks while also warning of potential strong measures if necessary. In the past 48 hours, officials from the Trump administration have made it clear that future actions will depend on Iran’s response.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the decision now rests with Iran. He also noted that while the U.S. does not wish to escalate tensions, it possesses the capability for decisive action. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held Iran responsible for disruptions in global maritime routes, emphasizing the importance of securing these waterways.
It is noteworthy that Trump has agreed to postpone military strikes against Iran for a week, which is seen as a significant step toward a concrete peace agreement.
