Hyderabad, April 15: K.T. Rama Rao, the executive president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), issued a stern warning to the central government on Wednesday. He stated that if the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies results in injustice towards South India, it will trigger a widespread movement in the region.
KTR emphasized that if the delimitation process diminishes the representation of southern states, it would not merely be a political maneuver or legislative amendment. Instead, it would ignite a powerful public movement across South India.
He reiterated that there has been no change in BRS’s stance on this matter. KTR affirmed their unwavering commitment to the firm position adopted three years ago.
KTR highlighted that they represent exemplary states that play a crucial role in the nation’s development. He criticized the potential political injustice resulting from the delimitation process for southern states, which have made significant progress in various sectors, including population control. He argued that reducing representation for developing states contradicts the fundamental spirit of democracy.
He made it clear that if there is an attempt to suppress the voice and representation of his people in Parliament, they will not remain silent. KTR declared that they will fiercely fight to protect the rights of South Indians.
He expressed hope that the central government would finally understand the ground realities and that the rulers in Delhi would listen to their concerns and make the right decisions.
All political parties in the state, except for the BJP, have opposed the proposed proportional model for delimitation.
Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, calling for national political consensus on a mixed model for increasing Lok Sabha seats.
In his letter, Reddy stated, “The proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats based on population or proportional models is unacceptable to many states, especially those in the south. I want to draw your attention to my serious concerns regarding the proposal for proportional increase in Lok Sabha seats, which could prove dangerous for the country if implemented on a proportional basis.”
Reddy also urged the chief ministers of other southern states to unite against the central government’s attempts to increase Lok Sabha seats proportionally, asserting that it would be extremely harmful and detrimental to the interests of southern states.
