New Delhi, February 25: Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has expressed concerns that society is not ready for the changes brought by artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized that the impact of AI will vary across industries, depending on the nature of tasks performed by AI.

During a discussion on the WTF Podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, Amodei stated that AI is rapidly advancing towards achieving human-like capabilities. However, society is not fully prepared for the transformations that will ensue.

He likened the current situation to a tsunami, noting that while people can see it approaching, many still convince themselves that it is not real. “It feels like this tsunami is coming towards us. It’s so close that we can see it, yet people are making excuses, saying, ‘Oh, it’s not really a tsunami; it’s just an illusion,'” he remarked.

Amodei explained that the impact of AI on industries will differ based on the nature of the work involved. He highlighted that human-centered roles requiring deep emotional understanding and feedback may take longer to evolve.

Conversely, tasks such as coding, mathematics, and scientific research are increasingly being handled by AI systems. The discussion also touched on evolving perceptions of data as a primary driver of AI progress.

“When you train in a mathematical or coding environment, you don’t actually get real data… it’s more artificial. You are generating data,” he noted, adding that “dynamically generated data by models is becoming more significant.”

He further mentioned that the involvement of AI in coding tasks is on the rise. However, automating other responsibilities in software engineering will take more time.

Nonetheless, Amodei believes that the complete automation of such tasks could happen much sooner than many anticipate.
