India Strengthens Economic and Strategic Interests Amid Iran-U.S. Conflict

New Delhi, June 20: A resolution has been reached after over a hundred days of conflict between the United States and Iran. While both nations have ceased hostilities and the Strait of Hormuz has resumed operations, the repercussions were felt globally from February 28 to June 18. During this period, India undertook significant strategic measures to shield its economy from potential damage.

The war severely disrupted supply chains in the Middle East. In response, India rapidly diversified its trade. This diversification has been a key strategy for India. Amid strained relations with the U.S. and the ongoing crisis in West Asia, India finalized a free trade agreement with the European Union (EU). Additionally, in February 2026, India secured a major trade deal with the United States.

In February 2026, India signed the ‘Terms of Reference’ for a free trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Given the supply crisis in West Asia, India increased its crude oil imports from Russia despite diplomatic pressures.

During the U.S.-Iran conflict, Prime Minister Modi traveled to several countries to safeguard India’s global interests and strengthen new alliances. Before the attacks on Iran by the U.S. and Israel, he visited Malaysia to ensure trade and secure palm oil supplies.

Just before the onset of the attacks, PM Modi visited Israel, where discussions focused on defense cooperation and maintaining strategic balance. Following this, the U.S. and Israel launched a significant assault on Iran.

Amid ongoing attacks from both sides, in May 2026, PM Modi visited the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The UAE visit focused on energy supply, while collaborations with European nations, particularly Italy, led to critical minerals and defense deals under a Joint Strategic Action Plan.

Just before the agreement between the U.S. and Iran, PM Modi visited France and Slovakia. Through new trade partnerships, diversification of energy sources, and balanced diplomacy, India signaled that its goal is not only to avoid losses but also to seize new opportunities in the changing global landscape.
