Major Railway Upgrade Planned Between Bengaluru and Tumakuru

Mumbai, June 20: A significant step is being taken to enhance rail connectivity between Bengaluru and the neighboring city of Tumakuru in Karnataka. Railway Minister V. Somanna announced on Saturday that preparations for the construction of a fourth railway line (quadruple line) between the two cities are progressing rapidly.

The ambitious project, costing over ₹6,000 crores, is currently identifying additional land at a swift pace. The minister indicated that the land acquisition process is expected to commence within the next five to six months.

Somanna stated, “The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been completed and approved by the technical committee. The proposal will now be submitted to the Cabinet and the NITI Aayog. Following that, land acquisition will begin in five to six months.”

He explained that the existing railway track from Bengaluru to Tumakuru will be developed into four lines. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara is interested in extending the metro from Bengaluru to Tumakuru, and the central government is fully prepared for this initiative.

Somanna emphasized that if any city has the potential to develop like Bengaluru, it is Tumakuru.

Once the project is completed, express and passenger trains will operate on separate tracks, eliminating the need for waiting at signals or crossings. This will enhance operational capacity and is expected to reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Tumakuru by nearly half.

The new four-line railway project will alleviate congestion on one of Karnataka’s busiest rail routes, strengthen rail connectivity, and promote regional economic activities, benefiting daily commuters.

Notably, a large number of people use the Bengaluru-Tumakuru rail route daily for employment, education, and business. Tumakuru, located about 68 kilometers from Bengaluru, serves as the district headquarters. However, the current double track is unable to handle the increasing rail traffic, leading to delays and inconveniences for passengers.
