Six Candidates File Nominations for Umreth By-Election in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, April 7: Six candidates submitted a total of eight nomination papers for the Umreth Assembly seat by-election in Gujarat on Monday. According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, voting is set for April 23. The nomination process began following the notification issued on March 30.

Among those who filed their nomination papers on April 6 are Jitesh Kumar Sewak (Independent), Mahendra Parmar (Independent), Bhururaj Singh Chouhan (Congress), Rajni Kumari Chouhan (Congress), Nirupaben Madhu (Independent), and Sunil Kumar Bhatt (Right to Recall Party).

As per the Election Commission’s guidelines, candidates must submit an affidavit along with their nomination papers using Form-26.

Congress candidate Bhururaj Singh Chouhan expressed confidence in his victory. Prior to filing, a meeting named ‘Vijay Vishwas Conference’ was held, where party leaders addressed the workers.

During the event, state Congress president Amit Chavda criticized the BJP, stating that its leaders have become “arrogant and autocratic” due to their power. He noted that while this by-election may not change the government immediately, it will certainly set the direction for the future. He emphasized that this contest is not just between two candidates, but a fight to voice the pain, anger, and demand for justice from the people of Gujarat.

Chavda alleged that corruption allows commission money to flow directly to the ‘Kamal’ (lotus) party, implicating the entire system.

Senior Congress leaders, including Tushar Chaudhary, Bharat Singh Solanki, Jagdish Thakor, and Imran Khedawala, were present during the nomination process alongside party workers and officials from Anand district.

Meanwhile, the BJP has nominated Harshad Parmar, son of the late legislator Govind Parmar, as their candidate for the by-election following his father’s passing in March.
