New Delhi, April 9: According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Kerala recorded a voter turnout of 62.71% and Puducherry 72.40% by 3 PM on Thursday during the assembly elections.
Meanwhile, Assam reported an impressive voter turnout of 75.91% by the same time, indicating significant participation across various assembly constituencies.
The voting figures suggest that despite common challenges and weather conditions, a large number of people in Assam are heading out to cast their votes. Assam stands out as one of the states with the highest voter engagement compared to others.
Voting for the assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry began at 7 AM. The elections are being held for 126 seats in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 30 in Puducherry, with results expected to be announced on May 4.
In Kerala, approximately 2.71 crore voters are deciding the future government. Voting is ongoing at 30,471 polling stations since 5:30 AM. Notably, around 200,000 voters have already cast their ballots through home voting.
The main contest in Assam is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The ruling BJP is striving for a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to return to power after losing in 2016.
The term of Assam’s 126-member assembly will end on May 20.
Voting in Puducherry also commenced peacefully on Thursday, with citizens actively participating in the election for the 30-member assembly.
