Record Voter Turnout in Puducherry Assembly Elections

Mumbai, April 9: Voting for the 30-member assembly of the Union Territory of Puducherry concluded on Thursday under tight security. The elections witnessed a remarkable voter turnout, reaching 86.92% by 5 PM, surpassing the previous record of 86% set in 2006.

This turnout also exceeded the 82.2% recorded in the 2021 assembly elections, indicating a rise in political awareness and active participation among voters. Official voting ended at 6 PM, but those still in line were allowed to cast their votes through a token system.

Officials expressed confidence that the final voter percentage would increase, as individuals in line were permitted to vote. Voting commenced at 7 AM across all constituencies and proceeded peacefully throughout the day. Enthusiastic participation was noted in Puducherry, as well as in the Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam regions, with long queues observed outside polling booths, reflecting the public’s engagement in this significant election.

A total of 950,000 voters were eligible to cast their ballots, including 23 seats in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam. Notably, female voters numbered 503,000, surpassing the 446,000 male voters.

The administration established 1,099 polling stations, with 209 classified as sensitive, where additional security measures were implemented.

The election featured a competitive landscape among various parties, with the primary contest between the ruling NDA coalition, led by the All India NR Congress, and the opposition INDIA alliance (Congress, DMK, and VCK). The entry of actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK), also generated notable interest among voters.

With record voter turnout and a fierce contest, this election could prove to be a pivotal mandate for the political future of Puducherry.
