Monte Carlo, April 7: Jannik Sinner kicked off his campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters with an impressive victory. On Tuesday, Sinner defeated Hugo Humbert in straight sets, securing his spot in the third round.
The world number two maintained his excellent form on clay courts, following his historic ‘Sunshine Double’ win, by achieving a remarkable 6-3, 6-0 victory in Monaco. The Italian player aims not only to win his first ATP Masters 1000 title on clay this week but also to reclaim the top ranking from current champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Hugo Humbert started confidently, winning the opening rally. However, Sinner quickly found his rhythm, dominating the first set with his powerful baseline game and precision. Once he took the lead, the 24-year-old elevated his performance, allowing his opponent to score just six points throughout the set, showcasing his supremacy on clay.
This victory extends Sinner’s impressive streak at the Masters 1000 level, where he has won 36 consecutive sets since last season. Having reached the semifinals in Monte Carlo twice before, Sinner is now set to face either Francisco Cerundolo or Tomas Machac in his next match, as he seeks his first major title on clay.
In another match, Matteo Berrettini advanced to the next round after his opponent, Roberto Bautista Agut, withdrew due to injury. Berrettini, who has struggled with fitness issues in recent years, will face seventh seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round. A loss in this match could see him drop out of the top 100 rankings for the first time since April 2024.
