Simdegas Mangoes Make Historic Debut in London

Mumbai, June 8: Simdega district in Jharkhand has achieved a historic milestone. For the first time, mangoes from the district have reached London. Local leadership has hailed this achievement as a significant success for both the district and its farmers, sparking joy among the farming community.

District Commissioner Kanchan Singh expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating, “The arrival of Simdega mangoes in London is a matter of great honor for our district. Under the state government’s ambitious plan, mangoes were planted across 3,101 acres, primarily through women-led horticulture projects. These orchards have now reached the shooting stage, with an expected production of around 300 metric tons. To explore market opportunities, the district administration invited buyers from various states. Following successful efforts, 1.3 tons of high-quality mangoes have been exported to London.”

This marks the district’s first export, with preparations underway for additional shipments. The goal is to establish Simdega mangoes in both national and international markets, ensuring better prices for farmers and enhancing their incomes. This achievement not only brings pride to the district but also boosts the morale of farmers. It paves the way for other products, such as cashews and chironji, to gain recognition in national and international markets.

The Commissioner highlighted the remarkable participation of women in this project. Women have been actively involved in horticulture under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and other schemes. The Farmer Producer Company (FPC) is entirely women-led. Due to technical support and care, the plants have remained healthy, leading to promising yields.

She emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Jharkhand government’s women-centric development policy. Empowering women economically serves as a foundation for social change, granting them financial independence, decision-making power, and social respect. This successful export has brought smiles to local farmers, especially women. The administration aims to ensure that other agricultural products from the district reach global markets in the future. This achievement also strengthens the commitment to women’s empowerment and a self-reliant India.
