Sikkim Achieves Full Literacy Status Ahead of National Deadline, President Murmu Congratulates

Gangtok, May 27: Sikkim has achieved the status of a fully literate state under the central government’s Ullas-Nava Bharat Literacy Program. This milestone has been reached ahead of the national target set for 2027.

The announcement was made during the seventh convocation ceremony of Sikkim University, attended by President Droupadi Murmu.

Present at the event were Sikkim’s Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and the state’s Education Minister Raju Basnet.

The Ullas-Nava Bharat Literacy Program focuses on adult education, basic literacy, and lifelong learning, ensuring inclusive access to education for all segments of society.

In her address, President Murmu congratulated the Sikkim government and its people for achieving full literacy status. She expressed pride in Sikkim being a fully literate state and congratulated Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his government, and all residents of Sikkim for this accomplishment.

She praised the participation of women in literacy initiatives, stating that the education of mothers and sisters reflects the inclusive nature of this campaign. Murmu emphasized that it is the collective efforts and contributions that have led to the state’s full literacy today, marking it as a shared achievement.

Governor Mathur described this accomplishment as a moment of pride for the Himalayan state and congratulated the Chief Minister and his team.

Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba noted that this achievement is the result of years of hard work by volunteers, teachers, and grassroots workers in villages and communities. He stressed the need to maintain this momentum and uphold the state’s literacy levels in the coming years.

Officials indicated that this achievement was made possible through coordinated efforts from gram panchayats, urban local bodies, and local communities, which actively participated in literacy and educational awareness programs. This significant milestone in literacy is seen as a step towards empowerment, dignity, and social progress, contributing to the broader vision of a developed India by 2047.
