Well Discovered Amid Demolition of Mosque Sparks Controversy in Saharanpur

Saharanpur, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : During the demolition of a mosque located within the Saharanpur District Collectorate complex, workers uncovered a well believed to be over 25 feet deep. The exact depth and further details are pending investigation. Maulana Kariye Isahak Gora, a prominent figure from the Jamiyat Dawat-ul-Muslimeen and a Deobandi scholar, claims this discovery serves as significant evidence of the mosque’s historical presence.

Gora stated, “We learned this morning that a mosque was demolished at the Saharanpur District Collectorate, and a well was found beneath it. Reactions vary, and people are discussing this matter extensively. Historically, mosques were constructed adjacent to wells or included wells within their premises.”

He explained that this practice was essential for the Muslim community, as they perform ablutions, or wudu, before prayers. Wudu involves washing the face, mouth, and hands, as well as rinsing the feet, making water access crucial for any mosque. “This well is a strong piece of evidence that a mosque existed there. There are many more proofs,” he added.

Gora urged the examination of land records, asserting that the legal team possesses ample evidence. He emphasized that proof existed both before and after the mosque’s demolition, with the well being a central piece of this evidence.

He criticized the manner in which the mosque was demolished, claiming it was conducted hastily and without proper legal procedures. “The order to vacate the mosque was issued in a rush. We observed various reactions from leaders on social media,” he noted. Some claimed to have spoken with senior officials, while others insisted that bulldozers would not be used.

The demolition occurred following a court ruling regarding an illegal mosque. Gora reiterated the need for a fair investigation into the matter, stating, “We have previously urged the government for a fair inquiry. Justice must be served without bias against any community. It is a grave injustice to have demolished a mosque that was over a century old in mere minutes.”
