South Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident unfolded in South Delhi on Sunday when a four-story building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area. The structure was reportedly housing paying guests, many of whom were students. Following the collapse, several individuals became trapped under the debris. According to the Delhi Fire Service, four people have been rescued and sent to the hospital for treatment.
Local MP Bansuri Swaraj and MLA Anil Sharma confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is in constant contact with officials from the district administration, Delhi Police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). She has instructed authorities to provide all possible assistance to the victims.
Anil Kumar Sharma, a BJP MLA from RK Puram, expressed his sorrow over the incident while speaking to reporters. He noted that students from various locations were residing in the paying guest accommodation. “It is clear that students are trapped under the rubble. Just now, two children were rescued, and disaster management teams, along with the police, have taken them to the hospital. Others are still trapped inside,” he said.
Sharma mentioned that some students have been calling for help from beneath the debris. He added that Chief Minister Gupta has dispatched the entire emergency response team to the site, and Delhi BJP chief Harsh Malhotra is in constant communication by phone. The administration’s top priority is to rescue the trapped students.
Witnesses reported that the collapse occurred between 11:30 and 11:45 AM. One local resident stated, “Many students are trapped inside, including women.” Another resident estimated that 20 to 30 individuals might be trapped.
A student named Aastha Kumari recounted hearing a loud noise before ambulances arrived. “We saw rescuers taking the injured away. We hope everyone is okay. I live in the PG myself. There was no arrangement from the administration. If there were concerns for the safety of the children, why isn’t there a board outside the PG? Satya Niketan is a hub for students,” she said.
She also criticized the building’s design, stating, “A student hostel should have at least two exit gates, but there is nothing here. How can such a tall building stand in such a small area?”
The Delhi Fire Brigade received reports of the incident around 1:30 PM. Station Officer Narendra arrived at the scene by 1:50 PM and confirmed that the building had collapsed with people trapped inside. Subsequently, a fire tender and several officers were dispatched to the site.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her concern over the incident, stating that rescue and relief operations are ongoing at a war footing. In a social media post, she noted, “The building collapse in Satya Niketan is worrying. Teams from DDMA, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, MCD, CATS, and Civil Defense are conducting rescue operations. As a precaution, the adjacent building has been evacuated. Every effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to affected families.”
