Assam BJP Advocates for Uniform Civil Code as a Step Towards Social Justice

Guwahati, May 27: Senior BJP legislator Bimal Bora strongly supported the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the Assam Assembly on Wednesday, describing it as a historic move to strengthen social justice, equality, and constitutional values.

Participating in the ongoing assembly session discussing the UCC bill, Bora emphasized that it represents not just a legal proposal but also the cultural spirit of unity in India’s diversity.

“This bill is not merely a legal framework. It reflects India’s cultural unity, social justice, and constitutional consciousness,” he stated.

Highlighting India’s diversity, the BJP legislator noted that while languages, traditions, and customs may differ from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and across the northeastern regions, the soul of the nation remains one.

“India is a nation of unity in diversity. Languages, traditions, and cultures may vary, but our spirit is the same,” he added.

Bora explained that the concept of a Uniform Civil Code is linked to the fundamental spirit of the Constitution, which advocates for equal rights and justice for all citizens, transcending religion and community.

Citing Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy, he mentioned that the framers of the Constitution envisioned a uniform civil framework across the country.

“The idea of UCC is not sudden or arbitrary. It is part of the framers’ vision,” he asserted.

The BJP legislator described the concept of “one nation, one law” as the party’s ideological commitment, noting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fulfilled his promise to introduce the UCC bill in the assembly.

Bora stated that the proposed law aims to ensure respect and justice for women across all communities.

He referred to gender equality and court rulings related to personal laws, pointing out that many current legal provisions create inequalities for women.

Discussing Assam’s social diversity, he remarked that marriage and family traditions are the strong foundations of society, and this bill seeks to enhance social responsibility and stability within families.

In conclusion, he expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for presenting this “historic” bill in the assembly.
