Kolkata, July 17: Siddiqulla Chaudhary, the president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, has made sharp remarks regarding writer Taslima Nasreen and the proposed legislation related to ‘Vande Mataram.’ He criticized Nasreen, stating that the Muslim community has rejected her views and effectively ostracized her.
Chaudhary commented on the proposed law concerning ‘Vande Mataram,’ asserting that the matter is currently under judicial review and that the court will ultimately decide.
He noted that Nasreen’s writings have sparked protests in various parts of the world, including Bangladesh. Her comments on Islam and religious beliefs are deemed unacceptable by the Muslim community. Chaudhary mentioned that he had previously written to then-West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and later discussed the issue with former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu. Following the community’s backlash, the government took the matter seriously.
Chaudhary emphasized that the Muslim community is highly sensitive to their religious beliefs, the Prophet, and Islamic traditions, and any remarks on these subjects are intolerable. He strongly criticized Nasreen’s writings, declaring that her chapter has closed, and she is no longer accepted by the Muslim community. In a multi-religious country like India, respect for all religions is paramount. He highlighted that Muslims and Hindus in West Bengal have coexisted peacefully for years.
He provided examples, stating that the Muslim community has never objected to events like Durga Puja and Kali Puja, maintaining a spirit of respect for all faiths. According to him, every individual should have the freedom to practice their religion, and no one has the right to hurt the sentiments of another faith.
Regarding the proposed bill that includes penalties for disrespecting ‘Vande Mataram,’ Chaudhary reiterated that the matter is currently in court. He mentioned that he has approached the judiciary on this issue, and the final decision will rest with the judiciary.
He further stated that a previous ruling by the Supreme Court clarified that no individual can be compelled to sing ‘Vande Mataram.’ Those who wish to sing it may do so, while those who do not should not be forced. He has filed an appeal in court regarding this matter but will not disclose further details at this time, awaiting the court’s decision.
