Bangalore, March 15: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Saturday that the state government is committed to addressing regional imbalances in northern Karnataka. He emphasized that the Congress-led government is fulfilling its promises to the public. “Guarantees and development will receive equal priority,” he stated.
This announcement came during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Bagalkot Medical College and Research Institute, alongside the inauguration of various development projects and the distribution of compensation for land acquired under the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) Phase III.
Siddaramaiah paid tribute to the late former MLA H.Y. Meti, who represented the area and played a crucial role in establishing the government medical college in Bagalkot. He clarified, “The announcement for the medical college was made in the 2025 state budget, and its foundation is being laid as part of the state government’s development agenda, not due to the upcoming by-elections.”
Since coming to power in Karnataka, the state government has initiated several foundation-laying ceremonies and inauguration events aimed at district development. “The state government intends to establish a medical college and trauma center in every district, with steps already taken in around 25 districts,” he added.
Looking ahead, a super-specialty hospital will also be established in Bagalkot next year. The Chief Minister dismissed allegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that guarantee schemes have depleted funds for development, calling these claims baseless.
“Our (Congress) government is giving equal priority to guarantees and development. Approximately ₹50,000 crores are spent annually on guarantee schemes, with a total of ₹1.22 lakh crores spent so far,” he noted.
Siddaramaiah criticized the BJP for failing to establish a medical college in Bagalkot during its four years in power, accusing the party of attempting to create divisions among communities.
He pointed out that the previous BJP government showed no interest in providing compensation under the Upper Krishna Project, which discouraged farmers from giving up their land. The Congress government has now decided to pay compensation in a single installment.
He stated, “Funds for land compensation under UKP Phase III have been allocated in the current state budget, with additional funds to be arranged later.” Farmers voluntarily giving up land will receive ₹40 lakh per acre for irrigated land and ₹30 lakh per acre for dry land. He also claimed that the BJP is spreading misinformation about this scheme.
The Chief Minister revealed that ₹446 crores are being distributed as compensation for 900 acres of land across eight villages under the UKP project. He reiterated that the Karnataka government always fulfills its promises.
He also accused the central government of failing to provide necessary approvals for several irrigation projects in the state, including the Upper Krishna and Mahadayi projects, despite repeated requests. “Our (Congress) government is making every effort to ensure justice for the people of northern Karnataka. We are committed to addressing regional imbalances in this area,” he concluded.
