Kolkata, March 2: The West Indies’ journey in the T20 World Cup 2026 came to an end after a 5-wicket loss to India in the Super-8 match on Sunday. West Indies captain Shai Hope commended Indian batsman Sanju Samson, who played a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls, including 4 sixes and 12 fours, snatching victory from the Caribbean team.
In the match, West Indies batted first, posting a total of 195 runs after losing 4 wickets. In response, India chased down the target in just 19.2 overs.
Following the defeat, Hope remarked, “We probably fell short of runs, especially on a chasing ground like this. We could have added a few more runs in the final overs. Sanju Samson played an outstanding innings, and we must credit him for that, but it would have been better if we had a few more runs.”
India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs in 4 overs. He not only broke the partnership between Shimron Hetmyer (27) and Roston Chase (40) but also claimed both their wickets.
Regarding the match’s turning point, Hope stated, “Jasprit Bumrah is their (India’s) strike bowler. When the ball is in his hands, something happens. He broke the partnership at a crucial moment when Shimron Hetmyer was in great form. That was a pivotal moment in the game. Still, we reached around 190 and gave ourselves a chance.”
Hope praised his bowlers, saying, “I felt our bowling was good throughout the tournament. We adapted to different conditions. Our bowling in the powerplay was particularly notable. Akeal Hosein performed excellently, and Gudakesh Motie contributed well upon his return. We just couldn’t cross the finish line in this match.”
He added, “You never want to end your tournament at this stage. If we had won one more match, we would have been in the semifinals, and then anything was possible. The boys deserve full credit. We have set high standards for ourselves. We need to capitalize on key moments and play our best cricket on match day.”
