
Kolkata, May 12: Police reported on Tuesday that Shraddha Biswas, also known as Bela, a senior Maoist leader from Jharkhand, has been arrested in Kolkata.
The Kolkata police apprehended her in the Koshipur area of North Kolkata. Bela, a resident of Chakdaha in Nadia district, is a member of the Jharkhand Maoist Regional Committee and has been active in the region for an extended period.
Additionally, a Maoist named Madhai Patra, from Hooghly district, surrendered to the police. He was also active in Jharkhand. A press conference was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Alipur Bodyguard Lines.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand stated that further information could be obtained through interrogation of the arrested Maoist leader. Jharkhand police will also come to Kolkata to question Bela. The commissioner noted that the senior Maoist leader’s health condition is not good.
Bela has been active in Jharkhand since 2005 and has over 20 cases registered against her in the state. A reward of 1.5 million rupees was announced for her capture. She primarily operated in the Ghatshila, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum areas.
The police commissioner mentioned that Bela’s name was linked to a case in Belpahari, West Midnapore district, during 2004-05. She was arrested in that case but did not return to the state after being granted bail.
According to police, Bela later came to Kolkata for reasons yet to be clarified. The police arrested her based on information from confidential sources. It remains unclear why she was in Kolkata, and the police have not commented on this matter.
The police commissioner indicated that they would determine how long ago she arrived in Kolkata through interrogation.
In addition, Madhai Patra from Jangipara in Hooghly district also surrendered to the police on Tuesday.
