Ahmedabad, June 13: One year has passed since the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, and survivors still feel a lingering fear when passing the site. The crash claimed the lives of 260 people, including 19 on the ground, and every aircraft that flies overhead serves as a painful reminder of that day.
Medical student Bhagirath Chavda was among the fortunate individuals who narrowly escaped death. He recounted, “I had just finished my meal in the mess and was heading back to my hostel when the explosion occurred. We all rushed to see what had happened.”
Upon arriving at the scene, Chavda discovered that a plane had crashed, splitting into two parts. One section collided with the Atulyam building, while the other fell onto the roof of the mess, resulting in the deaths of four students.
Reflecting on his harrowing experience, Chavda said, “We were completely numb and didn’t know what to do. Yet, we gathered our courage and entered the building to rescue those trapped inside. Some were injured, and four had already lost their lives.”
He added, “We still feel scared passing that tragic site. Whenever a plane flies overhead, it brings back memories of that incident.”
Meanwhile, families of the victims gathered at the crash site in Meghani Nagar to pray, perform rituals, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
Gunjan Chaudhary visited the site to honor his wife, who was on her way to London when the crash occurred. He shared that she was two months pregnant, and the loss has plunged their family into deep sorrow.
Chaudhary emotionally recalled, “She called me at 1:38 PM as she boarded the flight, telling me to head straight to the airport from work.”
He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the release of the final investigation report to ensure justice for the affected families.
The government announced that a thorough investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing, and the final report will be released after completing all necessary international reviews and discussions.
Pratap Singh, the brother of one of the victims, appealed for financial assistance for his education, citing his family’s dire economic situation. “I want to pursue further studies, but my family’s financial condition is very weak. My father works in a factory. I just request the government to help us,” he said.
