Scotland Accepts ICC Invitation to Replace Bangladesh in T20 World Cup 2026

Edinburgh: Cricket Scotland has accepted the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) invitation to replace Bangladesh in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, starting from 7 February.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) declined to participate in the tournament as per the original schedule, which required the team to play its group stage matches in India. Following this, on Saturday, the ICC confirmed that Scotland would take Bangladesh’s place in the prestigious event.

Bangladesh had raised security concerns after their fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The team requested to shift their group stage matches from India to Sri Lanka and even proposed swapping groups with Ireland. However, the ICC did not approve these requests.

Cricket Scotland stated that their men’s team has been training intensively for several weeks and will now travel to India immediately to acclimatise ahead of the tournament. Details regarding the team selection will be announced in the coming days.

Wilf Walsh, Chairman of Cricket Scotland, said, “On Saturday morning, I received a call from ICC Chairman Jay Shah confirming Scotland’s invitation to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. I am pleased to accept this on behalf of our team, who are ready to play. We thank the ICC for this opportunity and look forward to competing against some of the world’s best teams in India in the coming weeks.”

Trudy Lindblad, Chief Executive of Cricket Scotland, added, “This morning we received a letter from the ICC asking if our team would participate in the Men’s T20 World Cup. We have accepted the invitation and are grateful to the ICC. This is an incredible chance for Scotland’s players to perform on a global stage in front of millions of supporters. We also recognise that this opportunity has come under challenging and unique circumstances. Our team has been preparing for the upcoming tour for several weeks and is now ready to arrive in India to adapt to local conditions.”

Scotland will compete in Group C alongside England, Italy, Nepal, and West Indies. The team will play three of its matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
