Sanju Samsons Historic Knock Breaks Virat Kohlis Record in T20 World Cup

Kolkata, March 2: The Indian cricket team has secured its place in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026. In a thrilling match at Eden Gardens, they triumphed over the West Indies by five wickets, thanks to a stellar performance by Sanju Samson. He delivered an outstanding innings, scoring an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls. This remarkable feat makes Samson the highest scorer for India in a chase during the T20 World Cup.

Sanju Samson has shattered a significant record held by Virat Kohli. Kohli had previously scored 82 runs while chasing against Australia in the T20 World Cup 2016 and matched that score against Pakistan in 2022. In his explosive innings, Samson hit 12 fours and 4 sixes, leaving the Caribbean bowlers helpless. With his 97 runs, he also became the second-highest scorer for India in T20 World Cup history.

Samson formed a crucial partnership of 58 runs with Hardik Pandya. Despite wickets falling at the other end, he anchored the innings and sealed the match with a boundary off Romario Shepherd, leading India to the semifinals for the sixth time. Chasing a target of 196 runs set by the West Indies, the Indian team achieved their goal in 19.2 overs, losing 5 wickets. Besides Samson, Tilak Varma contributed 27 runs, while Hardik Pandya added 17 runs.

Earlier, the West Indies scored 195 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Roston Chase played a notable innings, scoring 40 runs off 25 balls, while Rovman Powell remained unbeaten with 34 runs from 19 balls. Jason Holder also contributed with an unbeaten 37 runs off 22 balls, hitting 2 fours and 3 sixes. India’s semifinal clash will be against England on March 5, marking the end of the tournament for the West Indies.
