Retired Colonel Divya Shankar Bhattacharya Honored by Army Chief

Tezpur, June 22: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi honored retired Colonel Divya Shankar Bhattacharya, a distinguished military officer from Assam, at an official ceremony held in Tezpur on Saturday. He presented the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and Medal to Colonel Bhattacharya.

While bestowing the honor, General Dwivedi praised Colonel Bhattacharya for his service to the nation. He noted that throughout his illustrious military career and beyond, Colonel Bhattacharya upheld the highest ideals of duty, dedication, integrity, and professional excellence.

General Dwivedi remarked that even after retirement, Colonel Bhattacharya has made significant contributions to the country’s development and progress. His conduct and service have set an example for both soldiers and civilians.

Colonel Divya Shankar Bhattacharya served in the Indian Army for over 33 years. He is also recognized for being the first person from Assam to achieve an all-India rank of 1 in the UPSC NDA examination.

During his military career, he served in border areas with Pakistan and China and participated in Operation Rakshak (anti-terrorism campaign) and Operation Parakram in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. He also topped the prestigious Senior Officers Course and served as a Director in the Border Roads Organization.

Even after retiring from the army, Colonel Bhattacharya remains active in social service. He currently works as an advocate at the Guwahati High Court and is associated as a Professor of Practice at Arya Vidya Peeth College in Guwahati.

He founded the Divya Shankar Foundation, which provides guidance and training to students from Assam and the Northeast aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces. His efforts have inspired many young individuals to pursue careers in defense services.

Recently, he was also awarded the Best Sadhana Award 2026.

Colonel Bhattacharya is the youngest son of the late Gauri Shankar Bhattacharya, a renowned political activist, lawyer, and writer from Assam. The honor bestowed by the Army Chief symbolizes his lifelong contributions to the nation, army, and society, serving as an inspiration for future generations.
