Jammu, February 14: A significant measure has been implemented in the border areas of Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, to enhance security. District Magistrate Rajesh Sharma issued an order on Saturday, prohibiting non-essential movement within a 5-kilometer stretch from the international border. This restriction specifically applies to the area between BOP Pahadpur Forward and BOP Karol Krishna.

According to the order, the security situation in border areas has become sensitive, with ongoing concerns about potential cross-border firing or infiltration. This step aims to ensure the safety of villagers and prevent any anti-national activities. The District Magistrate invoked his powers under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) to issue this directive.

Additionally, a complete ban has been placed on the movement of heavy vehicles, including trucks, tippers, and multi-axle vehicles, on the old Samba-Kathua road from 9 PM to 6 AM. This curfew-like restriction will remain in effect for approximately 60 days, starting from February 14, 2026, and may either conclude after 60 days or be lifted earlier.

The order clearly states that prior notice of this restriction was not feasible, hence it was issued unilaterally for the public’s interest. Strict action will be taken against violators under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code, which includes penal provisions.

This directive comes in response to recent events in the border areas of Kathua, where significant successes have been achieved in anti-terrorism operations, including encounters with commanders of Jaish-e-Mohammed. Given the tense situation at the border, security forces remain vigilant. Similar night curfews have been imposed in neighboring districts like Samba to prevent infiltration and weapon smuggling via drones.

Local residents are urged to refrain from entering the border area unless necessary and to cooperate with security agencies. The administration emphasizes that this measure is temporary but essential for public safety. If the situation normalizes, the restrictions may be lifted promptly.
